This paper provides an institutional perspective of a single competency-based institution – Thomas Edison State University - and examines how the University’s history intersects with both the renewed upsurge in interest in CBE as well as the changing dynamic of what constitutes a robust and successful CBE program. It will also illustrate the achievements and obstacles the core CBE team encountered through their journey to realize a modern direct assessment program.
