While badges have existed for many years, open digital badges are relatively new. The open badge became more prominent with the Mozilla digital badge project which began in 2011. Open badges include information about criteria as well as the individual’s documentation “baked” into the badge. In this article, further detail about open badges as well as examples will be given. In addition, the potential and future of open badges will be discussed.
